Dark Sky County & Misty Ridge Retreat B&B

Misty Ridge Retreat B&B is located in Foothills County adjacent to and south of the city of Calgary, Alberta.

The Foothills County boasts about it’s “dark sky’s”. Guest’s are awe-struck by the peacefulness of the countryside and view of the night sky’s.

Foothills County has implemented a bylaw for it’s residents to reduce the light pollution as much as possible. This requires outdoor lighting to glow downward during the night. Dark Sky counties recognize that light pollution is a growing problem. Light pollution comes from street lights, vehicles and buildings. These light sources also cause skyglow. Skyglow causes the brightening of the night sky by light bouncing off particles in the atmosphere. This is why it is hard for people in cities and small towns, to see the milky way and stars.

Skyglow also spills over into areas where the light is not needed. This is called light trespass.

Light trespass may cause health issues for people. Sleep patterns can be disrupted and hormonal imbalances can occur and lead to long term health issues.

As with humans, light pollution disrupts the habits of the local wildlife behaviours. The ecosystem, that depends on a regular light and dark patterns, are also effected by light pollution.

2024 was a fantastic year for viewing the Aurora Borealis and for an extra special experience, Foothills County had a spectacular view of the rare comet C/2023 A3.

Many guests have relaxed in the Misty Ridge Spa and gazed at the stars while being serenaded by the coyotes.

The Rothney Astrophysical Observatory also calls Foothills County home. The observatory is owned and operated by the University of Calgary. This observatory conducts research and teaches the public and community about the wonders of the stars above. Events for the public happen regularly.
